Fix the error message “Microsoft Bootstrapper has stopped working”

4. September 2020

On some PCs, the error message "Microsoft Bootstrapper has stopped working" sometimes occurs when installing Office 2016 or older versions. This error can have several causes, which is why there is unfortunately no one-size-fits-all solution to the problem. We would be happy to go through a few steps with you, which will fix the problem relatively quickly.

In most cases the problem has to do with access rights. This means that if you run the setup from the wrong place, the computer will not allow it.

Most of the time, the problem occurs with our customers who use the Office software as a USB stick have ordered. Make sure not to run the "setup.exe" directly from the USB stick. Since the USB stick is a foreign drive, the computer does not allow the installation. So copy the entire content from the USB stick to your PC (for example to the desktop).

You can then run the setup from there by clicking on setup.exe. In most cases the error no longer appears.

The error message “Microsoft Bootstrapper has stopped working” still occurs

In this case you have various options to achieve your goal. One possibility would be to remove various remains from old installations. With the Fix-IT-Tool from Microsoft you can find old remnants of Office installations and uninstall them safely.

If you continue to run into problems, please feel free to contact us by email, we will be happy to help you extensively. Even if you are not a direct customer of ours.
